Frequently asked questions

How old does my character need to be in 2019?

If your character is a timedrifter, they need to have been alive in both 1967 and 2019. So they need to be old-ish in 2019, and 52 years younger in 1967. In fact, they need to also be at least 30 months old in 1967, so the latest their birthday can be is March 19, 1965.

This means that they are at least 54 1/2 years old in August of 2019

ALTERNATIVELY: you could write from the point of view of a younger person (or an older person) who suddenly finds themself surrounded by people with a memory of the future.

How long should my story be?

It can be a single page or a novella. That’s entirely up to you. Jeremy’s story is on the long side… covering a lot of ground.

Can I make up my own world?

NO

This setting is here on Earth. The past your character arrives at is the actual past. The 2019 they left was the actual 2019. So they do not arrive in 1967 to find out that Germany won WWII, or aliens have invaded. It’s just 1967.

HOWEVER….

As soon as your character hits 1967, what she does to change things is up to you. Maybe she attracts aliens to land in 1970. Maybe she becomes president and declares war on Canada. The new 2019 might look a whole lot different than before.

What language can I write in?

Pubpub uses Unicode, so you can write you story in any of several languages and use their scripts. Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Hindi, Tamil….. these and others are supported.

Can I publish under a pseudonym?

YES

You can publish your story under a pseudonym. No problem. If you want to change your name later, you can do that too. And you can ask for help.

FOR EXAMPLE… this piece is written by “Oxo Whitney” a pseudonym…

Pub access control ("members") is separate from the contributor/author listing on a Pub, and you can add a contributor with any name you like. So all you'd need to do is tell authors to remove their accounts from the contributor listing, and add the pseudonymous author, like so:

Can I edit my own story?

YES

You can always make changes and published the latest, greatest version. It’s a strength of PubPub!

Can I unpublish my story?

YES

As long as you do not ask for a DOI for your story, you can “unpublish” this any time you want. Again, you can always do a new version too.

Can I use ideas and characters from other stories in this collection inside my own story?

YES

You can use the content of other stories to add interest/weirdness to yours… Maybe think of your story as a chapter in a larger novel… It’s good to acknowledge this borrowing in your work. And it’s great to create something together that’s bigger than its parts. And you can send the author a note saying you are using their work… start a conversation.

You can also ignore the other stories and just write what you want.
